Information for Under 25's
Most car hire providers have rules and regulations regarding the minimum age for hiring a car with them. Each car hire provider differs on their age requirements so you should really check with them how old you need to be to hire a car with them. Most car hire providers will let you hire a car if you are aged over 21 but other will require you are over 25. The type of vehicle you are permitted to hire also depends on your age. For example, you may not be able to hire a 4 x 4 or prestige car unless you are over the age of 30. Your car hire provider should inform you of this at the time of booking as you will have to inform them of your age before you finalise your car hire booking.
As a young driver you may find you are charged an additional fee on your hire which is referred to in your policy as a Young Driver’s Surcharge. This charge is added purely for the reason you are a young driver and therefore more of a high risk driver. The fee is added per day and varies for your destination country and provider. It is usually charged for drivers aged under 25. You can find car hire providers who do not have young driver’s surcharge.
If you are a student aged over 19 you can hire a car with Hertz and get student discounts. Please note you will still have to pay a young driver’s surcharge with Hertz if you are aged under 25, even if you have student discount.
- Your card driving license
- The paper counterpart of your driving license
- Another proof of identification such as your passport.
- Vaild credit card
Photocopies of any part of your license or identification will not be permitted. Failure to produce these documents will result in the termination of your car hire so do not forget them. As you may be travelling by plane remember to keep these documents on you or in your hand luggage and not in the cabin luggage. If your documents are in your cabin baggage and the airport looses your luggage or your luggage gets delayed then you will not have your documents and the car hire will be cancelled.
When you hire a car you will notice your policy includes Collision Damage Waiver (sometimes called CDW) and Theft Waiver. This may seem like insurance but it is not. If your car was damaged or broken into during your rental period you may have to pay for some of the damage as excess. Car Hire providers can charge you up to £2,000 for excess but you can avoid this charge if you buy excess insurance. You can buy excess insurance from providers directly but it is usually cheaper if you buy from a specialist car hire insurance provider.
When you hire a car there are a few things you should do to avoid unnecessary charges at the end of your rental.
The first thing you should do is inspect your vehicle for any damage. If you find any damage on your vehicle before your rental starts report it to the car hire provider. If you do not do this the provider may assume you caused the damage and request you pay for it.
Secondly, if you are driving abroad you should make sure you are aware of the rules and regulations in your car hire country. For example you should be aware of the speed limits, parking rules and meanings of the different road signs and markings.
Finally you should return your vehicle with the same amount of fuel as when you received it. Usually, car hire providers will not include fuel in the booking price, therefore they will charge you if you return the vehicle empty. The charge for fuel is usually a great deal more than the cost of fuel so so you will save money by returning the vehicle with fuel.

An Airport Surcharge is an additional fee added to your rental when you hire from an airport. The reason for the charge is that car hire providers are often charged by the airport to use their facilities. Car hire providers offset this charge by passing it on to their customers. The charge is not usually a lot but be aware of it if you are looking for cheap airport car hire.
One Way Hire
If you are looking for a way of getting to or from the airport you should consider a one way hire. A one way hire is when you collect your vehicle from a local branch and drop it off at the airport, or collect your car from the airport and drop it off at a local branch. This is often a better option than public transport as it is more reliable and there is no charge for additional baggage. It can also be a cheaper if there is a group of you as you can split the cost between all of you.
Europcar, National and Alamo all offer one way hire under the name “Airport Connect”. The price for Airport Connect starts at £49. Click here for more information on Europcar and Airport Connect.
